Gretchen Whitmer than they are about passing COVID-19 relief legislation for Michiganders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To say I\u2019m frustrated would be an understatement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn&#8217;t run for office so that I could waste my time arguing and playing politics. I didn&#8217;t come here to play games. I&#8217;m not a politician. I&#8217;m a computer engineer. We see a problem \u2014 we find a solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am committed to finding more solutions for you and others in our district. We\u2019ve worked so hard to get where we are in this pandemic, and I\u2019m not about to let up. Whether that\u2019s ensuring the health and safety of our students and educators, or helping the unemployed get the relief they need, I have been \u2014 and continue to be \u2014 ready to get to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/601c0a5cd768d27f178b4567\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SenRosemaryBayer\/videos\/833407603873713\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static21.senatedems.org\/media\/700x0\/601c0ee56f15a.jpeg\" alt=\"State Senator Rosemary Bayer\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>APPLICATIONS NOW AVAILABLE FOR TUITION-FREE SCHOLARSHIPS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday, Feb. 2, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced the launch of the $30 million Michigan Reconnect program, the largest effort in state history to ensure that more than 4.1 million Michiganders who are 25 or older, and who do not have a college degree, will have an opportunity to earn a tuition-free associate degree or skills certificate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>PLEASE NOTE: Due to unprecedented demand, the skills certificate component of this program is already closed to applications as of Feb. 3.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/reconnect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static21.senatedems.org\/media\/700x0\/601c0acf1baed.png\" alt=\"Michigan Reconnect\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Reconnect scholarships are accepted by all Michigan community colleges and are even available to eligible adults who are already enrolled in their local community college. The program pays the remaining balance of tuition and mandatory fees after other state and federal financial aid have been applied. For those who choose to attend an out-of-district community college, Reconnect will pay the in-district portion of tuition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Eligibility<br \/><\/strong><\/em>To be eligible for Michigan Reconnect, you must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Be at least 25 years old when you apply.<\/li><li>Have lived in Michigan for a year or more.<\/li><li>Have a high school diploma.<\/li><li>Have not yet completed a college degree (associate or bachelor\u2019s).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Applications<br \/><\/strong><\/em>Michiganders can submit applications at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/601c0a5cd768d27f178b4567\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/reconnect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michigan.gov\/Reconnect<\/a>. The application takes less than five minutes to complete and can be done on a mobile device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity is administering Reconnect in partnership with the Michigan Department of Treasury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>INDOOR DINING, CONCESSIONS, PERSONAL SERVICES REOPENED<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) recently released&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/601c0a5cd768d27f178b4567\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/coronavirus\/0,9753,7-406-98178_98455-550215--,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a new epidemic order that began Monday, Feb. 1<\/a>, allowing for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Indoor dining at restaurants with certain requirements.<\/li><li>Concessions at casinos, movie theaters and stadiums.<\/li><li>Personal services requiring mask removal.<\/li><li>Non-residential gatherings of up to 10 people from two households.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This order will last until Sunday, Feb. 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Restaurants and bars can now admit patrons at 25% capacity with up to 100 people. Tables must be six feet apart with no more than six people per table. Outdoor tents with four sides are permitted under these same rules. Bars and restaurants must close by 10 p.m. Additionally, contact information must be collected from diners for contact tracing purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The voluntary MI COVID-19 Safer Dining program allows food service establishments to become certified by having their ventilation system inspected and submitting their inspection report to the state indicating they are optimizing airflow. Once certified, businesses will be featured on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/601c0a5cd768d27f178b4567\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/coronavirus\/0,9753,7-406-98178_105173---,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michigan.gov\/COVIDSaferDining<\/a>&nbsp;website and receive a copy of their certification to post at their establishment to alert diners of their participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indoor residential and non-residential gatherings are still limited to 10 people and two households. MDHHS continues to urge families to avoid indoor gatherings or to pick a single other household to interact with consistent with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/601c0a5cd768d27f178b4567\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/documents\/coronavirus\/12-07_Social_Gathering_709804_7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guidance already released by the department<\/a>. Families are encouraged to stay home as much as possible to maintain momentum and to protect loved ones. Families are also encouraged to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/601c0a5cd768d27f178b4567\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/coronavirus\/0,9753,7-406-98158-547534--,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mask Up, Mask Right<\/a>, using guidance for what masks to wear and how to wear them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/Coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static21.senatedems.org\/media\/700x0\/601c0ff4d35df.png\" alt=\"Feb. 1 Gathering Guidelines\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The epidemic order continues to temporarily pause indoor contact sports and other venues and activities where participants have close physical contacts and are not consistently masked, like water parks. However, as of Jan. 22, stadiums can allow up to 500 people at venues that seat over 10,000 people and stadiums that seat less than 10,000 can be at 20% capacity, up to 250 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As before, employees who work in jobs that cannot be performed from home can continue to go to work, while employees who can work from home should continue to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&gt;&gt; Information around this outbreak is changing rapidly. To learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine, visit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/601c0a5cd768d27f178b4567\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/coronavirus\/0,9753,7-406-98178_103214---,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michigan.gov\/COVIDvaccine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MICHIGAN\u2019S COVID-19 VACCINATION STRATEGY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Friday, Jan. 29, the Protect Michigan Commission, comprised of a diverse group of leaders from across the state charged with helping raise awareness about the safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine, hosted its first meeting and unveiled&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/601c0a5cd768d27f178b4567\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/attachments\/MIEOG\/2021\/01\/29\/file_attachments\/1676273\/1.29.21%20Michigan%20Vaccine%20Strategy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michigan\u2019s COVID-19 Vaccination Strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commission also discussed the state\u2019s strategy to get 70% of Michiganders age 16 and older vaccinated as quickly as possible. The strategy is being guided by the following guiding principles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>All Michiganders have equitable access to vaccines.<\/li><li>Vaccine planning and distribution is inclusive and actively engages state and local government, public and private partners; and draws upon the experience and expertise of leaders from historically marginalized populations.<\/li><li>Communications are transparent, accurate, and frequent public communications to build public trust.<\/li><li>Data is used to promote equity, track progress and guide decision making.<\/li><li>Resource stewardship, efficiency, and continuous quality improvement drive strategic implementation<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Protect Michigan Commission will also develop an outreach strategy to identify and work with communities around the state where there is hesitancy to the vaccine. They are expected to complete their work and submit a report to Governor Whitmer by Dec. 31, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&gt;&gt; More information about the commission, including a list of members, is available at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/601c0a5cd768d27f178b4567\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mdhhs\/0,5885,7-339-71551_5460_105209---,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MDHHS &#8211; Protect Michigan Commission<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GOVERNOR WHITMER PRESENTS RECOMMENDATIONS TO LOWER COST OF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Housed within the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the Prescription Drug Task Force she created worked with bipartisan members of the legislature to recommend legislation to require transparency, hold accountable those profiting from skyrocketing prices, and help make necessary medications affordable for all Michigan families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Task Force recommended the following specific policies, among others:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Require transparency reports from drug manufacturers, Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs), and hospitals.<\/li><li>Require state licensure for Pharmacy Benefit Managers.<\/li><li>Hold accountable those profiting from skyrocketing prices.<\/li><li>Help make necessary medications affordable for all Michigan families.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past six years, the average price of drugs prescribed to treat diabetes, heart disease, depression, and other common conditions has more than doubled. To address these issues among others, the Governor announced a Prescription Drug Task Force last year to develop policy solutions to lower prescription drug costs and create more transparency surrounding prescription drug pricing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&gt;&gt;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/601c0a5cd768d27f178b4567\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/documents\/mdhhs\/Prescription_Drug_Task_Force_Report__12302020_FINAL.Web_1_712685_7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Click here to view the full report<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LEARN HOW TO PAY FOR COLLEGE AT \u2018VIRTUAL FINANCIAL AID NIGHT\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students and families looking for help paying for college are encouraged to register for an upcoming Virtual College Financial Aid Night hosted by Michigan Department of Treasury\u2019s MI Student Aid team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sessions will be available from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday in February. All sessions are free and open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants will be able to gather information on the following financial aid topics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>FAFSA application information<\/li><li>Federal financial aid programs<\/li><li>State financial aid programs<\/li><li>Scholarship searching<\/li><li>MiSSG Student Portal Accounts<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to limited space, participants are encouraged to sign up for one session only.
