This is a pre-emptive action designed to&nbsp;maximize state action and&nbsp;assist local governments to slow the spread of this disease.&nbsp; I appreciate the Governor\u2019s decisive actions, taking every step possible to keep Michiganders safe.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a lot of information out there, but I wanted to share a summary of what we know at this time.\u00a0\u202fThe disease caused by this\u00a0particular virus\u00a0(which is\u00a0\u201cSARS-CoV-2\u201d)\u00a0has been named \u201ccoronavirus disease 2019\u201d (abbreviated \u201cCOVID-19\u201d).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>THE BASIC<\/strong><strong>S<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What are the symptoms of&nbsp;<\/em><em>COVID<\/em><em>&#8211;<\/em><em>19?&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the National Institute of Health, symptoms may appear in as few as two days or&nbsp;as long as&nbsp;14 days after exposure to the virus. They include:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Fever&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Cough&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Shortness of Breath&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How does\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0spread?\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Health experts are still learning about how this new coronavirus spreads. Other coronaviruses spread from an infected person to others through:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The air by coughing and sneezing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>Close personal contact,\u00a0within about 6 feet and including\u00a0touching or shaking hands.\u00a0<\/li><li>Touching an object or surface with the virus on it, then touching your mouth,\u00a0nose,\u00a0or eyes.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How can I protect myself from getting&nbsp;<\/em><em>COVID<\/em><em>&#8211;<\/em><em>19<\/em><em>?&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are traveling overseas,&nbsp;follow the CDC\u2019s guidance at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CDC.gov\/Travel<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is currently no vaccine, but there are&nbsp;important&nbsp;steps you can take to prevent&nbsp;the&nbsp;spread of&nbsp;the&nbsp;flu and the common cold that will also help prevent&nbsp;COVID19, including:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wash your hands with soap and water\u00a0for at least 20 seconds.\u00a0<\/li><li>If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>Avoid touching your eyes,\u00a0nose,\u00a0or mouth with unwashed hands.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or upper sleeve when coughing\u00a0or sneezing.\u00a0<\/li><li>Avoid contact with people who are sick.\u00a0<\/li><li>Stay home if you are sick and contact your health\u00a0care provider.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>Put space between yourself and other people.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>Avoid close contact, sharing cups, or sharing eating utensils.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>Practice good health habits. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>Be prepared with the following supplies: Maintain a two-week supply of water and food at home. Routinely check your regular prescription drugs to ensure that you won\u2019t run out.\u00a0Keep non-prescription drugs and other health supplies on hand.\u00a0\u00a0Get copies and maintain electronic versions of health records.\u00a0\u00a0Talk with family members about how they would be cared for if they got sick and what would be needed to care for them in your home.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>Older people and those with serious medical conditions and underlying health problems\u00a0are at higher risk of severe illness\u00a0and\u00a0should avoid crowded places, avoid non-essential travel such as long plane trips or cruises, and stock up on supplies like groceries and prescription medications.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Should I wear a mask to protect myself from getting COVID-19?<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No. Facemasks are not recommended for healthy people. Facemasks should be used by:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Healthcare workers\u00a0<\/li><li>People taking care of someone with COVID-19\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are sick with respiratory illness and visit a healthcare provider, you may be asked to wear&nbsp;a facemask during your visit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Are there any cases of&nbsp;<\/em><em>COVID<\/em><em>&#8211;<\/em><em>19<\/em><em>&nbsp;in Michigan?&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of this date (March\u00a011, 2020), there are\u00a02\u00a0confirmed cases\u00a0of\u00a0COVID-19 in Michigan.\u00a0\u00a0Please know that this can change daily.\u00a0Information about the number of persons under investigation (PUIs) and specimens tested is\u00a0updated daily at\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mdhhs\/0,5885,7-339-71550_5104_97675---,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan.gov\/Coronavirus<\/a>. Also available are the total number of people who may have been exposed to the virus who are referred to local public health for monitoring or assessment.\u00a0\u00a0The current case count of COVID-19 in the United States is available at:\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-%20ncov\/cases-in-us.html\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019- ncov\/cases-in-us.html<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Can my health\u00a0care provider test for\u00a0COVID-19\u00a0disease?<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Testing is dependent on the\u00a0current status\u00a0of COVID-19 in local communities, as well\u00a0as\u00a0the\u00a0course of illness. Clinicians will work with the local health department to determine if\u00a0testing is\u00a0warranted.\u00a0Criteria\u00a0may change as we understand more about COVID-19.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What is Michigan doing to prevent coronavirus&nbsp;<\/em><em>from&nbsp;<\/em><em>spread<\/em><em>ing<\/em><em>&nbsp;in the state?<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MDHHS began working with local health departments, health&nbsp;care coalitions, hospital,&nbsp;and health&nbsp;care partners when the novel coronavirus outbreak began in Wuhan, China. Initial focus was working with federal partners to ensure that Michigan\u2019s public health system could support traveler screening and monitoring to limit the entry of coronavirus cases into the U.S.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Feb. 3, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services activated the Community Health Emergency Coordination Center, and they have been working diligently with local health departments, health systems, and medical providers to make sure appropriate screening and preparations for coronavirus are being made.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Feb. 28, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer activated the State Emergency Operations Center to&nbsp;maximize coordination with state, local and federal agencies, as well as private partners, and to help prevent the spread of the disease.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On March 3, she announced the creation of four task forces to combat the spread of coronavirus and assess the impact it may have on Michiganders\u2019 day-to-day lives.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Information around this outbreak is changing rapidly&nbsp;every day. The latest information is&nbsp;always&nbsp;available at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michigan.gov\/Coronavirus<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CDC.gov\/Coronavirus<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, the&nbsp;Oakland County Health Division (OCHD) has released various toolkits to help community sectors&nbsp;prepare for and prevent the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in our communities. Toolkits and&nbsp;prevention resources are available at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakgov.com\/health\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">www.oakgov.com\/health<\/a>&nbsp;for the public, health&nbsp;care providers, businesses,&nbsp;schools, childcare centers, faith-based organizations, senior centers, food service workers and first&nbsp;responders.&nbsp;You can&nbsp;also&nbsp;call&nbsp;the&nbsp;Nurse on Call&nbsp;helpline&nbsp;at 800-848-5533,&nbsp;Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. \u2013 5:00 p.m.&nbsp;\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My office will continue to monitor this situation and keep in close contact with state and county officials.&nbsp;&nbsp;Please call your health professional or the Oakland County Nurse&nbsp;On&nbsp;Call line if you have questions or concerns&nbsp;about your own health.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Friends,\u202f\u202f&nbsp; All of us are aware of the coronavirus situation.&nbsp;&nbsp;In order to&nbsp;better protect our residents, last night Governor Whitmer declared a state of emergency.
