{"id":5646,"date":"2020-01-29T16:44:52","date_gmt":"2020-01-29T16:44:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/bayer\/?p=5646"},"modified":"2020-01-29T16:44:52","modified_gmt":"2020-01-29T16:44:52","slug":"bayer-invites-local-heroes-to-state-of-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.senatedems.com\/bayer\/2020\/01\/29\/bayer-invites-local-heroes-to-state-of-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Bayer Invites Local Heroes to State of State"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>LANSING \u2014 Sen.&nbsp;<strong>Rosemary Bayer<\/strong>&nbsp;(D-Beverly Hills) has invited two Senate District 12 local heroes to attend the governor\u2019s annual State of the State address with her on Wednesday \u2014 Elizabeth Kelly, Executive Director of HOPE shelters, and Dr. Letha Hopkins-Powell, principal of Whitman Elementary School.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel that it\u2019s important for me to recognize our local heroes who are doing incredible work back in our communities,\u201d Sen. Bayer said. \u201cIt\u2019s an honor to be able to bring Ms. Kelly and Dr. Hopkins-Powell to the Capitol, where the decisions we make have a direct impact on the people they serve in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=616788035769387\">Kelly has served as the director of HOPE, or Helping Oakland\u2019s People Everyday, for nearly a decade<\/a>. The organization provides two programs for homeless individuals in northern Oakland County. She has won numerous awards for her work with HOPE, including the 2019 Zonta Club Leadership Award. Kelly also hosts \u201cA Wilder World,\u201d a weekly PBS show, which is the only regularly broadcast program that focuses on disability issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=577501676171749\">Dr. Hopkins-Powell is a dedicated leader with more than 30 years of experience in Pontiac\u2019s education system<\/a>. She has established new programs at the school, including weekend tutoring sessions for students who need help reading and helps cultivate a culture of excellence in the community.
