{"id":5512,"date":"2019-09-20T17:58:38","date_gmt":"2019-09-20T17:58:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/bayer\/?p=5512"},"modified":"2019-09-20T17:58:38","modified_gmt":"2019-09-20T17:58:38","slug":"legislators-within-oakland-county-take-a-stand-for-k-12-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.senatedems.com\/bayer\/2019\/09\/20\/legislators-within-oakland-county-take-a-stand-for-k-12-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Legislators within Oakland County take a stand for K-12 funding"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Votes reject budget proposal that fails to invest in Michigan classrooms\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LANSING \u2014 Sens.\u00a0<strong>Mallory<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>McMorrow<\/strong>\u00a0(D-Royal Oak),\u00a0<strong>Rosemary\u00a0Bayer\u00a0<\/strong>(D-Beverly Hills),\u00a0<strong>Jeremy<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Moss<\/strong>\u00a0(D-Southfield) and Reps.\u00a0<strong>Mari\u00a0Manoogian\u00a0<\/strong>(D-Birmingham),<strong>\u00a0Kyra Bolden\u00a0<\/strong>(D-Southfield) and\u00a0<strong>Robert<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Wittenberg<\/strong>\u00a0(D-Huntington Woods) today issued statements on their decision to vote no on the Republicans\u2019 proposed K-12 budget \u2014 a proposal that failed to make the type of investment in education that students and classrooms need in their districts and across the state.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen.&nbsp;<strong>McMorrow<\/strong>&nbsp;on the need for better budget investments in K-12 education:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was elected by the people in my district to support education solutions which will live on well beyond my term. I won\u2019t support a budget that falls so short. This budget does not adequately address the needs laid out by the School Finance Research Collaborative, nor does it position Michigan\u2019s schools to compete with the rest of the country. Currently, Michigan ranks dead-last nationwide for education funding growth. You\u2019ll see messaging that celebrates \u2018record funding\u2019 in this budget, but that\u2019s smoke and mirrors, at best. When considering inflation, this budget is flat and these School Aid Fund dollars are still at risk to be pulled to fill other holes in the budget. It\u2019s unacceptable. Our schools, communities, teachers, students&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;all of our residents\u2014&nbsp;deserve better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen.\u00a0<strong>Bayer<\/strong>\u00a0on budget shortfalls and making sure students have equitable resources:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile I appreciate the changes made to improve K-12 funding levels, it\u2019s still not good enough. I was sent to Lansing to fight for a better, more equitable, education system for our students. Sadly, this budget in its current form doesn\u2019t provide the resources our educators and students desperately need. Valuable research has shown the need for more money for our schools, yet this budget still falls short of even the minimum recommended funding levels.&nbsp;Our teachers and our children deserve so much better than this.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen.&nbsp;<strong>Moss<\/strong>&nbsp;on passing a budget that makes our kids and investing in education a priority:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMichigan\u2019s schools are in dire need of a robust and predictable funding stream that provides an education to every child in our state regardless of circumstance. Our funding has not kept up with inflation and, as such, the proposal being sent to the governor&nbsp;doesn\u2019t reflect our priorities as a state \u2014 forcing dedicated administrators and teachers to consistently do more with less. If we say we need to invest in our schools, we shouldn\u2019t be shortchanging them and continuing to leave our kids at a competitive disadvantage.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rep.\u00a0<strong>Manoogian<\/strong>\u00a0on standing up for Michigan\u2019s kids and future:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe research clearly shows that Michigan is not giving our students what they need to succeed, and this \u2018increase\u2019 is a drop in the bucket compared to what is needed to correct that. The residents of our district elected me to stand up for our kids and our future. I cannot in good conscience vote for a budget that continues to tell our schools, teachers and students they aren\u2019t worth the funding investment they need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rep.&nbsp;<strong>Bolden<\/strong>&nbsp;on rejecting the status quo to set up every student for success:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe budget passed by the House today fails to fully fund Michigan schools across the board, which is why I voted against it. Maintaining the status quo is not acceptable for our students or educators, especially if our funding doesn\u2019t keep up with inflation or provide adequate funding to support our at-risk youth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rep.&nbsp;<strong>Wittenberg<\/strong>&nbsp;on the need to provide equitable funding and fix the state\u2019s broken school funding model:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFamilies across our community deserve world-class schools that will teach our kids the skills essential to building a successful career.
