This is an insult to Michigan, just as the holiday season is kicking into gear. Speaker of the House Matt Hall outright canceled hundreds of millions of dollars for state projects ALREADY UNDERWAY that benefit Michigan - and benefit you. (By the way, my Senate colleagues and I only have an estimate for the number and scope of impacted projects - Speaker Hall hasn't released the official documentation for his debilitating cuts. How's THAT for government transparency?)
Whether or not you participate in these projects directly, they do impact you. Many of the projects whose funding "lapsed" are clear examples of the type of spending that drives Michigan's economy forward and sets the groundwork for a better tomorrow. They represent Michigan jobs - our neighbors who will be put out of work! Funds for roads and critical infrastructure, economic development programs in our communities, education programs, childcare services, mental health support funding, food access and distribution networks, training programs for our teachers, public safety, rural hospitals, and our veterans? Gone, thanks to Speaker Hall and House Republicans’ usage of obscure tactics that don’t give the Senate a say.
I’m beyond upset. I’m outraged and hurt - and I expect many of you are, too. My colleagues and I are hard at work to see what can be done to salvage this. Truly astonishing.

Great coverage on SB 539 - my bill to establish both temporary and indefinite do-not-sell lists for firearms. These do-not-sell lists would allow individuals to voluntarily add their names to the state's background check system to prevent them from impulsively purchasing a gun. The bill also includes provisions to accommodate individuals who wish to remove themselves from either of these lists.
As in many medical situations, with suicide, prevention is the best prescription.
