Happy Pride Month, S

What an exciting day! SB 517, my bill to modernize Michigan's school technology bond law, passed out of the Senate Education Committee today!

Under current law, public school districts (including Independent School Districts) have a very limited capacity to issue bonds for technology-related purchases. Consequently, school districts need to finance these purchases using their general funds, which perpetually pits technology upgrades against other valid uses of their resources. This leads school districts, especially school districts in less affluent areas, to delay upgrading their technology infrastructure well past its typical lifecycle.

SB 517 will give school districts more options for financing technology purchases and update the definition of “technology” in the Revised School Code for the 21st century. Let’s help our school districts stay one step ahead of threats to cybersecurity and furnish the best possible educational experience for our students!

Representative Sharon MacDonell is sponsoring this bill on the House side as HB 4818, and brought this critical issue to my attention. SB 517 now heads to the Senate floor for consideration.

I'm pictured here with Birmingham Public School District representatives Dr. Embekka Roberson, Zach Riley-Kelley, and Amy Hochkammer, who supported the bill in Committee today. Thank you for your presence and testimony!
